The Thing Nobody Tells You Before You Move to the UAE

Every year, thousands of people land in the UAE. For a job opportunity. Because a partner got transferred. Because someone, somewhere, said yes to an adventure.

What almost nobody warns you about is what you leave behind along with the furniture and the winter coats. Your safety net. The friend who knows your whole history. The sister who calls without you asking. The people you didn't have to explain yourself to.

Here, you start from zero. And the strange part is, this city makes it easy not to notice.

Convenience isn't always your friend

Groceries arrive at your door. A spa comes to your living room. You can build an entire, comfortable life here without ever needing to leave your building, let alone meet a stranger. Convenience, it turns out, is not always your friend when what you actually need is connection.

There are good apps now that help with this, ones that match you with people for a coffee, a dinner, a drink, and they genuinely work for some people. But for most of us, the real door into a new social circle isn't a screen. It's a shared activity.

The UAE actually delivers, if you show up

And on that front, the UAE genuinely delivers. Hiking groups. Choirs. Hockey clubs. Meditation circles. Archery, of all things. The more familiar ones too, padel courts and football pitches booked solid every evening. Whatever you're into, someone here is already doing it, on a Tuesday, at 7pm, and would love an extra person.

Still, for a lot of women, the threshold stays surprisingly high. Turning up alone to something new takes a particular kind of courage, especially when you're already stretched thin settling in.

And this isn't just a Dubai problem, or an expat problem. According to the World Health Organization's landmark Commission on Social Connection report, 1 in 6 people worldwide are affected by loneliness, a figure linked to an estimated 871,000 deaths every year. We talk endlessly about wellness as clean eating and daily movement. Social connection deserves exactly the same seat at that table. It isn't a nice-to-have. It's a determinant of health, in the same category as diet and exercise.

This is bigger than Dubai

This is, in many ways, exactly why Pink Ladies Games exists. It's for active women who care, and that "care" cuts both ways: caring about your own wellbeing, and caring enough to bring someone else into the fold.

Our teams are made up of 4 or 5 players. You can join entirely on your own. You can come with one friend and let us do the rest. Either way, we match you with a team that is genuinely open to meeting someone new, because most of them once were new themselves.

So if you're looking for a way in, a real one, not another app to scroll through, this might be it.

Contact us to find your team, solo or with your one true partner in crime. We'll take it from there.
